Netsayi Gowero-Kilembe

2023 Grant application mentee

Meet Netsayi Gowero Kilembe. She is currently a Lecturer in Child Health Nursing at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Malawi. She is a Registered Children’s Nurse with 10+ years of experience in nursing, midwifery, health management, nursing education and research. She is a recipient of the COINN International Neonatal Nursing Award of Excellence (Runner up) and received an award as the best neonatal nurse in Malawi. She has a desire to promote child health in Malawi through education, research, clinical practice, mentorship and policy and sees herself as a senior lecturer and/or a professor in Child health in the next 5-10 years. In 2023, Netsayi was selected as one of the mentees for the Ripple Global Health Research Network capacity building program. Through the program, she has gained skills in scientific writing including writing manuscripts and grants. Netsayi has been admitted at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to start her PhD in Global Health. She holds a Master of Science in Child Health from University of Malawi, a postgraduate diploma in child health from University of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery from Mzuzu University. Her Interests are in Health systems strengthening through capacity building and quality Improvement in Neonatal, Child an Adolescent Health 


Jennipher Phiri

2022 Grant application mentee

This is Jennipher Phiri, a registered nurse midwife and Public Health Specialist working with the Public Health Institute of Malawi under the Malawi Ministry of Health as a Medical Waste Management Specialist in the World Bank-funded project of Covid-19 since 2021. Jennipher Phiri was offered a fully funded scholarship to pursue a master's degree in public health (2018-2019) through the Australia Awards Africa Scholarship. The application was highly competitive as it was offered in many African countries. This scholarship helped her acquire knowledge and skills in qualitative and quantitative research. She also successfully applied for a grant worth 5000 AUD through Student Engagement Grant (SEG) at Melbourne University on "Building a pit latrine" at Balaka district hospital in 2019 to promote sanitation, which was completed. This grant helped her to further their knowledge and skills in leadership and project management. Jennipher holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Melbourne, obtained in 2019, and a BSc in Nursing from Kamuzu College of Nursing, University of Malawi, which she finished in 2010. She is interested in preventing and reducing the transmission of infectious diseases that pose global threats. She aims to achieve quality care by reducing and preventing harm to patients, health workers and visitors in healthcare facilities by enforcing standard precautions in infection prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). She aims to become an independent implementation science researcher and actively lead in preventing HAI and AMR. Through partnership and networking, Jennipher seeks to enhance clean and safe care, a patient right. Jennipher constantly explores ways of collaborating with other experts to improve the quality of care provided in health facilities and at the community level.


Lucy Grace Banda

2021 Grant application Mentee

Meet Lucy Grace Banda, a registered nurse midwife working with the Malawi Ministry of Health. She is a dedicated healthcare professional with over ten years of experience working in various departments of a busy tertiary hospital in Southern Malawi. In 2021, Lucy was selected as a mentee of the Ripple Global Health Research Network capacity building program. Through the program, she received mentorship, grant writing training, and was successfully awarded two grants in the same year. The first grant was the NIHR through the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Early Career Grants, and the second was the Malawi HIV Implementation Research Science Training (MHIRST) award. These grants will allow her to pursue her interests in implementation science, sexual and reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, and adolescent health. Lucy holds a Master of Public Health degree from the College of Medicine, University of Malawi (now KUHeS), which she obtained in 2020, and a BSc in Nursing from Kamuzu College of Nursing, University of Malawi, which she earned in 2010. She is interested in maternal and child health, total quality management, and health systems strengthening. Her ultimate dream is to become an independent implementation science researcher and be active in HIV research to ensure continued investment in the fight against HIV and AIDS.


Chikondi Makanani-Masamba

2023 Grant application Mentee

Chikondi Masamba Makanani is a final-year master's student in Global Health Implementation at KuHES. She holds a bachelor's degree in Nursing from Kamuzu College of Nursing and has worked for over 10 years as a registered nurse with a focus on providing quality nursing care in HIV/ART, family planning (reproductive health), cancer screening and management, and youth-friendly (adolescent) programs at the Malawi Ministry of Health. Her current research project focuses on preventing cervical cancer among HIV positive adolescent girls using HPV vaccines. Through this project, she has become interested in understanding how health policy can address health disparities and apply a health equity lens in HIV/cancer management. Chikondi's goal is to continue evaluating and assessing women's health outcomes through evidence-based interventions. She hopes to impact the lives of women, particularly disadvantaged and high-risk groups, through partnership and networking.
